Farmers and food security in focus for Salmon Arm Earth Day Celebration

Event to be held in conjunction with Downtown Farmers Market

Music, storytelling, vendors, exhibits and more can be enjoyed during the upcoming Earth Day Celebration in Salmon Arm.

Presented in a collaborative effort by the Salmon Arm Arts Centre, Song Sparrow Hall and Downtown Salmon Arm, this year’s Earth Day gathering on Saturday, April 20, is a free public event that runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ross Street Plaza. It is being held in conjunction with the Downtown Salmon Arm Farmers Market, with the local theme of “Taking Care of Food Systems” in acknowledgement of the efforts of local farmers and the connection between food security and the environment.

In addition to the Farmers Market, the event will include a variety of exhibitors and, on the Ross Street stage, entertainment for all ages. Kenthen Thomas will be sharing Secwépemc stories and Shayna Jones African and Afro-Diasporic spoken word, Ardie Burnham from the Salmon Arm branch of the Okanagan Regional Library will be sharing one of her well-loved story times, and Clea Roddick will play earth-inspired music. At noon, Runaway Moon Theatre will invite people take part in an engaging and active vegetable weaving art experience. (See times below)

Exhibitors will include Shuswap Climate Action, Shuswap Food Action, Shuswap Trail Alliance, the City of Salmon Arm, Shuswap Pollinators, Shuswap Columbia Invasives, Shuswap Naturalist Club, Okanagan College, Choose Refill and more.

Ross Street stage schedule:

• Storytime with Ardie from Okanagan Library at 10:30;

• Cross-cultural Storytelling with Kenthen and Shayna at 11;

• Vegetable Weaving Participatory Art with Runaway Moon Theatre at noon;

• Earth-Inspired Music with Clea at 12:30.

The event is being held with the support of and SA Green Event grant available through the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society.
