Here’s looking at you: Video Pen Pals host Chris Filiatrault records a message from Ali Balloun during a demonstration of the new social network at Marine Park.

Video Pen Pals is a social network that connects people from around the world through video.

The website, www.videopenpals.net, is the brainchild of Chris Filiatrault who started working on the project with a silent partner two years ago.

“It’s kind of like Facebook and YouTube mixed together, but it’s a platform where real people can meet real people, it’s not about having 1,000 friends,” Filiatrault said.

Through this free site, participants can send and receive video messages called vmail (video mail) to anyone in the world. In the future, the goal is to have captions to break through language barriers, he said.

“All projects are always a work in progress,” he added, noting they are working on an Android App so participants can connect from their cellphones. “Everything is possible these days.”

On Video Pen Pals no one is anonymous, says Filiatrault.

“We want a safe site so everyone can join and enjoy it.”
