The Shuswap Trail Alliance has been given the go-ahead from city council for a project that will improve the usability of South Canoe meadow for future events.

At its April 8 meeting, Salmon Arm council received a letter from Shuswap Trail Alliance (STA) operations manager Adrian Bostok, seeking council’s approval to install 220-volt power outlets at the meadow by the South Canoe trailhead parking lot. The meadow is home to the Rob Nash Memorial Shelter.

Bostok explained the STA had received funding from Tolko Industries for a project to enhance the usability of the meadow for events. He said the addition of the outlets would “be a significant improvement, allowing for the use of essential equipment for events such as food trucks, vendors and sound systems.”

“Currently, the lack of readily available power… makes holding events at the South Canoe trail network difficult,” wrote Bostok, noting the addition would benefit the STA and other event organizers, including the Salty Dog Enduro which attracts hundreds of riders annually.

City roads and parks manager said the only cost to the city would be annual BC Hydro fees and usage, adding he could see possibilities for rentals through the Shuswap Recreation Society.

Coun. Sylvia Lindgren said she’d be happy with the city absorbing costs “if this brings in things like Shred Kelly that’s coming in June, and brings in more events to that area. I think this is a great opportunity.”
