There are now firm rules for selling marijuana in Enderby.

On Monday, council adopted a bylaw that prevent retail marijuana sales within 100 metres of any residential zone, daycare facility, preschool, playground, community centre, school, park, civic or religious institution or any use catering to individuals under age 18.

“It’s really important. There are so many unknowns with the federal rules so we want to be ahead of the game,” said Coun. Shawn Shishido.

“We want to have rules in place before it happens.”

Enderby is also moving ahead with zoning amendments to regulate the production of medical marijuana.

On Monday, about 15 people attended a public hearing about the bylaw, with many of them involved in the industry and from out of town.

Mayor Greg McCune says there was a good discussion and a presentation from one man stands out.

“He was just a wealth of knowledge about the industry. He knew his stuff.”

It was also a chance for city officials to provide details on the bylaw.

“We explained out community and that it’s not a sprawling area with lots of locations,” said McCune, adding that property owners have the ability to apply for a bylaw amendment to possibly allow for a retail marijuana outlet.

“We’re not just saying no.”

City staff have previously indicated that council that prospective owners and compassion clubs are making inquiries and endeavouring to secure locations in anticipation of marijuana becoming legal.

“All we are saying if, ‘If you want to do business in Enderby, this is what we want you to do,” said McCune.
