A fishing trip on Shuswap Lake could have ended in tragedy if it wasn’t for the rescue efforts of some fellow boaters.

On Sunday April 16 at around noon it was reported to the Sicamous RCMP that three men had to be rescued from the frigid lake water by passing boaters.

According to the RCMP the three men were fishing in a 12 foot aluminum boat off the shores of Shuswap Lake near Sicamous, when their boat became swamped. The three men ended up in the water

Fortunately a couple was also boating nearby and heard the fishermen’s cries for help.

The couple followed the voices and located the men who were clinging to the swamped boat.

The couple sprang into action and helped the hypothermic men onto their boat and transported them back to Sicamous where BC Ambulance personnel were waiting.

The men were treated for moderate hypothermia and released from Shuswap Regional Hospital.

“On this particular day these individuals were very fortunate to have been rescued under such dire circumstances. These males were also wearing life jackets when they ran into trouble. This incident is a strong reminder of how important it is to practice safe boating and always be prepared for the worst possible scenario whether you are the rescuee or the rescuer,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.
