The B.C. Green Party has nominated its candidate to represent the Shuswap in the next provincial election.

Kevin Babcock currently works at the Canoe Plywood Plant and formerly worked in the railway and aerospace industries in the Lower Mainland.

“People don’t want to be dependent on government money, people don’t want to be dependent on government job creation,” Babcock stated in a news release. “I want to empower people to work towards their own career path – create their own ‘job’ and their own income, to make achievements that give them pride. The B.C. Green poverty reduction plan and commitment to a better education will give people the safety net they need to put their lives in their own hands.”

Andrew Weaver, leader of the B.C. Green Party, welcomed Babcock’s nomination.

“Kevin is a fantastic candidate to represent the people of the Shuswap,” Weaver said. “His extensive experience in the railway, aerospace and forestry industries have given him unique insight into their importance to B.C.’s sustainable economy. Kevin is an incredibly thoughtful person and cares deeply about the environment and his community. He would be a great addition to the B.C. Legislature and I am thrilled to welcome him to the B.C. Greens team.”

Babcock’s bio states he was raised in White Rock with a strong appreciation for the ocean and nearby mountains, nurturing his affinity for the Canadian outdoor experience. Throughout his youth, road trips brought him across Canada and most of the United States, with further travels including Australia and eventually to Poland where he met his wife in 2009.

Babcock attended Simon Fraser University for four years of general studies before relocating to Salmon Arm. He picked up a few more courses at Okanagan College and is currently studying at Thompson Rivers University finishing up his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, specializing in ethics. With a love for learning, the news release states, Babcock continues fulfilling his lifelong passion for seeking knowledge and finding new ways to apply it to today’s world.
