Malakwa firefighters arrived on the scene of a residential fire in the 5100 block of the Trans-Canada Highway Wednesday evening to find the home on the property fully engulfed. No one was injured in the blaze.

Firefighters are in the process of finding the cause of a Malakwa residential fire.

The fire occurred on the evening of Wednesday, Nov.16, at a property in the 5100 block of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Malakwa Fire Chief Joanne Held said firefighters were paged to the blaze at 5:04 p.m. When firefighters arrived on scene about 10 minutes later, they found a home fully engulfed in flame. The fire had also spread into wood stored behind the house and up some nearby pine trees.

“Everything was a pretty wet but a couple of trees did candle,” said Held.

No one was inside the residence at the time, and there were no injuries.

Held said the property owner, an Alberta resident, had returned to winterize the house, and had left a couple of heaters on to warm it up while he went into town for something to eat.

Sicamous firefighters provided mutual aid in the attack, which was focused on knocking the fire down and out. Held said she was at the site until sometime after 10:30 p.m., and returned on Thursday with regional fire chief Kenn Mount to investigate.

Held said the Sicamous and Malakwa firefighters put in a good team effort. She also gave thanks to Rhona Martin and the Malakwa Cafe, which provided the firefighters with sandwiches and coffee.
