No animals harmed in North Okanagan barn fire

Hollingsworth Road hay barn destroyed in blaze

An entire hay barn was destroyed in a Friday morning fire in Cherryville.

The structure on Hollingsworth Road went up in flames Jan. 12.

While it was full of hay, there were no animals in the barn at the time of the fire.

“Animal feed, horses tack, sandals etc, dirt bike riding gear, tools, apartment freezer full of dog food, grains for goats, feed of chickens, cat food, chain saws, farming equipment, snow blower, quads, snowmobiles, beds, dressers, computer desk, all that stuff is gone,” said Kindra Petersen of her family’s loss. “That’s not all of the stuff we lost either.”

The family has three horses and three goats that are now needing hay.

Owners aren’t sure how it started. They were also not able to extinguish the blaze, and there is no fire department in Cherryville.

The barn is not close to the home.

The community is already working to gather hay for the family.

“I’m sure we can gather enough hay to help them out for the winter,” said Tessa Arcand, Cherryville resident and summer time fire warden.
