Horst, Ann Evelyn

Evelyn Ann Horst passed away peacefully on May 6, 2009, at the age of 68, at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC. Evelyn was pre-deceased by her parents Howard & Estella Weber . She leaves to mourn her passing sons Jonathan and Gregory and daughters in law Lori and Jannine, five grand-daughters Kirstie, Chelsey, Paige, Gabrielle and Jade, as well as sisters Rita Erb, Gladys Simmons and Elizabeth “Betty” Litwiller.

Evelyn was born on April 30th, 1941 in Kitchener, Ontario. She had a long and varied career as a teacher, starting in southern Ontario with brief periods in Indiana and Kentucky, finishing her teaching career at Ralph Brown School in Winnipeg as a special education teacher.

When Evelyn was beginning her family life in London, Ontario, she worked with other parents to lobby for fathers in the delivery room and to develop a parent cooperative day nursery called Child’s Play. Jean and Cliff Hooker who were among these parents became life-long friends.

Evelyn had a keen interest in all things natural which was strongly influenced by her mother, Estella. She always had a vegetable garden and would often be seen working it. She had a strong interest in the natural world and doing things outdoors. She loved camping in Killarney Provincial Park in the 1970’s. During the past decade she enjoyed living in places on the shores of Lake Kalamalka and White Lake which afforded a lot of opportunities for walking and gardening.

During the 1990’s Evelyn owned property near Teulon, Manitoba where she lived for several years with her sons as well as an undeveloped piece of property on the border of Riding Mountain National Park. Both of these properties were about 80 acres and allowed for more contact with nature.

Evelyn was married to Glen Horst from 1967 to 1989. They raised Jonathan and Gregory first at their home in London, Ontario and then moved in 1981 to Manitoba where Evelyn stayed until 1997 when she moved to the interior of British Columbia.

Evelyn’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Mabie for her kindness and compassion, and to the very special staff at Salmon Arm and Peace Arch Hospitals, who cared so lovingly for Evelyn over the past month.

A memorial potluck will be held on May 14th, 2009 at White Lake Hall from 5 pm to 7:30pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Peace Arch Hospital Foundation, Shuswap Hospital Foundation or Humane Society of Canada.
