Gilbert Ramsay “Mac” Shaw-MacLaren passed away at Shuswap Lake General Hospital on January 19, 2009 at the age of 84 ½ years. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law Bob Prentice, Timothy Llewelyn Davies and sister-in-law Elsie Prentice.
Mac was born on August 18, 1924 and after growing up in Oyama, he joined the RCAF during WWII. To his great disappointment, he did not serve overseas, but saw a great deal of Canada. He met Pearl Prentice of Coldstream at a dance in Oyama and they married on May 24, 1947. Their only child, Lynne, was born in September of 1951. The family moved from Vernon to Salmon Arm in 1956.
Mac was a very active member of the Kinsmen Club and was chairman of the committee that built the original fountain in McGuire Lake. He so enjoyed the Kinsman conventions. He was passionate about hunting, fishing, his dogs and his garden (he had to dig the first potatoes). He loved a good joke and a wee drink of Scotch whiskey.
Surviving Mac are his beloved Pearl and daughter, Lynne McCartney and her husband, Doug of Salmon Arm. Also left to treasure memories of him are his sisters, Mary Llewelyn Davies of Coquitlam and Sheila Hunt and her husband Ken of Calgary, AB; brother, Chuck (Charles) Shaw-MacLaren and his wife Eleanor of 100 Mile House and their children and grandchildren; Pearl’s family in Vernon, Tom (Marilyn) Prentice, Isobel (Wally) Crosby and Gordie (Marj) Prentice and their families.
The date and time for an informal gathering of a family and friends will be announced at a later date.
