Valerie Dawn Soper (nee Fulton) passed away peacefully in Shuswap Lake General Hospital on Thursday night, April 30, 2009 at the age of 50 years. Valerie was born at Claresholm, Alberta in 1958 and arrived in Salmon Arm with her family in 1966.

Valerie attended Salmon Arm Elementary, JL Jackson and graduated from Salmon Arm Senior Secondary in 1976. After graduation, Valerie resided in Calgary and later moved to Squamish, BC where she met her husband Jim. Valerie and Jim were married in Langley in December, 1983 and their son Marshall, was born on May 22, 1985. Soon afterward, they moved to Squamish and lived there until relocating to Salmon Arm in 1992.

Valerie led an active life. She enjoyed many outdoor activities, nurtured from childhood by her dad, Baxter, mom, Alice and brother Kelly. Camping, hiking, rock climbing, motorcycling, boating, water and snow skiing were among her many favourites.

Valerie also enjoyed working with stained glass and was an avid gardener. For many years her vegetable gardens and flower beds were beyond extra ordinary. In earlier years, Valerie undertook hobby farming with her husband Jim. Valerie loved animals; closest to her were Junior, Minnie, Kayla, Ringo, Casper and Roadie. In later years, Valerie and her mother Alice, operated a small business grafting trees for some of the Okanagan nurseries.

The majority of Valerie’s working career was spent in the service industry, bringing a commitment to professionalism founded in an outstanding work ethic and genuine respect for her customers, coworkers and employers such as Doc’s Pub, Moose Mulligans and Intermissions Restaurant.

Valerie’s strong character, commitment to family, friends and her workplace, her work ethic and sound morals as well as her sense of humour have been extended to and can be easily recognized in her loving son, Marshall.

Valerie’s smiling face and remarkable courage in the face of many daunting obstacles, was an awe and inspiration to her family and friends.

Valerie will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by her parents Alice and Baxter Fulton, brother Kelly (Barb), niece Jennica, husband Jim, son Marshall (Caitlin) and many other relatives and friends.

Many thanks to the medical teams and professionals, in Salmon Arm and the Kelowna Cancer Clinic, who joined with her in their determined effort to battle her illness. May all our continued efforts bring results in fighting cancer.
