The Sicamous and District Recreation Centre is hopping this week with softball and hockey training.
The Junior Prep Prospects Camp kicked off on July 31 and runs to Aug. 4. This is the first year for this camp, and organizer Geoff Fuoco had no problem filling it, crediting the wide range of hockey talent providing instruction throughout the week.
The hockey school teaching roster includes BC Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Don Hay. Throughout his career, Hay has served both on the ice and behind the bench. As head coach for the Kamloops Blazers, he’s lead the team to two Memorial Cup wins and two President’s Cup titles. In 2013, Hay coached Canada’s U-18 men’s team to a gold medal against the United States, in Sochi, Russia.
Also providing instruction is Vernon Vipers head coach Mark Ferner, Portland Winterhawks goalie coach Angelo Maggio, former NHL’er Sandy Moger, Colorado Avalanche’s director of player development David Oliver, strength and conditioning specialist Greg Kozoris, mental performance consultant Sarah Kiengersky and Sicamous Eagles head coach Rob Fitzpatrick.
While the hockey school is on the ice, the Beyond the White Lines Softball summer camp will be at the arena and the adjacent Finlayson Park ball diamonds from July 31 to Aug. 5.

In this camp, athletes learn what it takes to play at an elite and collegiate level, given the unique opportunity of being mentored by, and working closely with current and former college coaches and players. The goal of the camp is to not only to help players develop skills, but also to develop character and work ethic.
