Nifty Fifty: Competitors from across the province gather at the Salmon Arm Curling Club rink Tuesday for the opening of the Nifty Fifty Bonspiel.

Teams from Peace Arch and Parksville came out at the Block A and B winners of the Nifty 50 Provincial Bonspiel held in Salmon Arm March 21 to 24.

On Thursday, after everyone had curled five games over the week, draw master Tom Nakazawa declared that the team winners were: the Divera Meeres rink from Peace Arch and the Caroline Moore rink from Parksville.

Local teams were shut out of the winnings.

Block A second place went to the Sheila Dale rink from Qualicum, third to the Helen Hamade  rink from Langley, fourth to the Yvonne Leach rink from Esquilmalt and fifth was the Susan Shaw rink from Kamloops.

For Block B, second place to the Gina Stewart rink from Ashcroft, third place to the Liz Karpluk rink from Kamloops, fourth to the Lori Wawryk rink from Quesnel and fifth to the Lenora Hudson rink from Coquitlam.

The event was an overwhelming success with 144 lady curlers from clubs from around B.C. attending the 44th annual bonspiel. Each year the event is held in different areas and the host for the 45th will be Esquilmalt.

Eunice Anderson, longtime curler at 91 years old, delivered the first rock and Jenny Commazetto, 82, held the broom to officially open the event.

Many volunteers and donors helped to make this event very special for the curlers and all of the visiting teams to Salmon Arm.
