Rockets take Midget AAA championship

The Thompson Okanagan Female Midget AAA Rockets won in the final best of three round of playoffs on Sunday vs. Kootenay Wildcats to claim the 2010/11 Female Midget AAA Championship.

The Rockets came out a bit slow in Game 1 on Friday  and the Wildcats used the advantage to come out on top, 3-1. The Rockets’ single was from Emily Gervais, with assists going to Shylah Gibb and Stephanie Schaupmeyer.

This set up a do-or-die situation for Game 2 on Saturday. But the Rockets regrouped and came out strong, defeating the ’Cats 3-2.  Rockets goals went to Maggie Shykula Ross (Kelsey Freudenberger), Mackenzie Barrie (Freudenberger, Gibb) and Freudenberger (Samm Fieseler, Schaupmeyer).

Game 3 on Sunday was a winner-take-all situation. A large crowd was on hand to watch a very exciting game.  The Rockets went into the second frame with a 2-1 lead. A goal from the Wildcats tied the game and it was 2-2 heading into the third period. The Rockets scored the game-winner part way through the third period, and then aggressively played the rest of the game to successfully keep the ’Cats from scratching back.  Scoring for the Rockets was Bre Frasca (Colby Williams, Fieseler), Williams (Barrie,Gervais) and Gervais (Gibb and Cora Sutton).

The Rockets, which includes players from throughout the Interior, including Salmon Arm, now head to Edmonton for the Pacific Midget Championships. The winner of this will proceed to the Esso Nationals on April 17 to 23.
