Although field conditions may slow the start of the season, where registration is concerned, youth soccer is all set to kick off.

Shuswap Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) Executive Director Kevin Harrison said the number of players registered for the upcoming spring season is on pace to meet or exceed last year’s numbers with over 1,100 players already registered compared to 1,175 last season.

Harrison said SYSA will field over 80 teams this coming season.

Registration remains open but Harrison said there are already wait lists forming for some age groups.

“The big thing we’re always looking for is volunteer coaches,”Harrison said.

Harrison said fields are usually open for practices to begin the week after spring break, but as there is still standing water and some snow on the ground he hasn’t even discussed opening with the city yet.

He says house soccer games should be able to start on April 22, but possibly on a limited number of fields.

Home games for SYSA’s development and select teams begin the weekend of April 22 and 23 with the select U13 boys and girls playing at Blackburn Park on April 22, the U11 girls development team play twice at Little Mountain Park on April 23.

The U13 and U16 girls select teams also play at Blackburn Park on April 23.
