Cadet Karl Bungay of Salmon Arm, B.C. was the top cadet in 24 Platoon during the first intake of the three-week Basic Marksmanship Course at Vernon Cadet Training Centre.

Bungay is a member of 1787 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (Rocky Mountain Rangers) of Salmon Arm.

Beginning in September, the corps parades each Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Bungay and 65 other cadets attended the Basic Marksmanship Course where cadets learned the principles of cadet marksmanship, and the skills necessary to conduct a summer biathlon.

Cadets were also taught the marksmanship skills needed to improve their personal results in competitions.

During the summer, more than 1,770 army, navy and air cadets from Western Canada will have spent up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley training centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships.

The Cadet Program is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Cadets make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship.
