This is a special year for the annual Salmon Arm Kids Fishing Derby.

Preparations are underway for the derby’s 25th anniversary on June 16. To mark the occasion, derby founder and co-organizer James Murray said there will be some special prizes to be won, including an aluminum fishing boat.

“All the prizes are going to be spectacular this year,” said Murray, attributing the event’s success in part to ongoing support from local sponsors.

The derby returned in 2023 following a three-year hiatus. Held on Father’s Day, the event was started by Murray 28 years ago in honour of his father.

Murray said the derby gives kids an opportunity to experience fishing, and families time together outdoors at the Salmon Arm Marine Peace Park wharf. It also gives young anglers the chance to win a wide range of prizes for various catch categories including first fish, largest fish, most fish and hidden weight. The boat, donated by Salmon Arm GM’s Ian Gray, will be a special prize to be won in a draw for families.
