The Banff Film Festival World Tour arrives in Salmon Arm this weekend with films that relate tales of remote journeys, ground-breaking expeditions and cutting-edge adventures told through the eyes of thrill-seekers, authors, philosophers and filmmakers from around the globe. Shows run Saturday and Sunday in the festival that raises funds for the non-profit Shuswap Search and Rescue. (Film contributed.)

Get ready for a weekend of adventure.

The Banff Film Festival World Tour stops in Salmon Arm this weekend so there will be no film society movie.

On Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17 and 18, see the best in mountain and adventure films while supporting Shuswap Search and Rescue.

The films are stories of remote journeys, ground-breaking expeditions and cutting-edge adventures told through the eyes of thrill-seekers, authors, philosophers and filmmakers from around the globe.

Since 1976, Banff has held the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival, a nine-day international film competition and annual presentation of short films and documentaries about mountain culture, sports and environment.

From that competition, 35 films, recommended by a screening committee and based on audience feedback, that are considered “the best of the fest” are taken out on tour to a larger audience.

The very first Banff film “tour” consisted of three cities in Canada, but has now become a year-round global film tour which encompasses more than 500 screenings in 40 countries on all continents (yes, even Antarctica). The program is a concentrated presentation of the diversity of the multi-day Banff Fest in just a couple of hours, and always includes some festival award winners.

The films feature a range of themes, including mountain climbing, skiing, kayaking, biking, adventure, culture and the environment. They are mostly short films ranging in length from four minutes to 41 minutes and each screening shows from six to 10 films. They include a mix of film styles, from intense action films to documentaries. The films show the diversity of views, interest and activities found in the mountains, sometimes including a political perspective.

The Banff films are always thrilling, awe-inspiring and artistic. Some of the adventures are dangerous and even reckless. I can’t tell you which films they’re presenting here because they work with the local sponsor to decide which films would have the most appeal in our area. But I can tell you that they’re always good.

The Banff Film Festival World Tour shows two different sets of films on Saturday and Sunday, so you can attend both nights. Tickets are available in advance at Wearabouts or at the door (get there early). The Salmar Classic opens at 6:15 p.m. and the show starts at 7. It’s $20 per night or $35 for both Saturday and Sunday, and keep in mind it’s a worthy fundraiser for Shuswap Search and Rescue.
