This weekend your Shuswap Film Society presents our November Mini Film Festival, featuring three films, each shown twice.
In Bookworm, precocious 11-year-old Mildred has never seen her dad before.
When her mother is hospitalized, her biological father, Shawn Wise, a magician, jets from the U.S. to care for her. He’s eager to please, so when she suggests they go camping to search for a fabled black panther that’s been marauding the countryside, he readily agrees.
Mildred guides her father through the wilderness, her encyclopaedic knowledge making up for his incompetence. Things change when a friendly couple encountered turns out to be anything but, and they actually face danger. An estranged family connects through crisis in this comedy/adventure romp for all ages, shot in the stunning beauty of New Zealand. Runs 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3.
Our second movie, The Outrun, follows a woman’s tumultuous journey through alcohol addiction and recovery.
There’s Oscar buzz about Saoirse Ronan’s portrayal of Rona, who returns to the Orkney Islands, the place she grew up, to recover from a descent into booze and drugs in London. Her reclusive bipolar father still raises sheep on the family farm; her mother, separated from her father, has found religion and thinks it’s the answer for Rona, too.
In her quest to maintain her sobriety, Rona takes a job working on a remote Island and in time reconnects with the world that formed her. The Outrun jumps around in time, reflecting Rona’s previous mistakes and mental struggles. It's a very real, beautiful small film that resonates with the messiness of life. Runs 4 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Three Musketeers: Milady, is the second instalment of the most recent iteration of the classic Dumas novel.
The first film showed D’Artagnan becoming the 4th Musketeer and falling for Constance. This sequel begins with the kidnapping of D’Artagnan’s beloved Constance and his discovery that his most promising ally in rescuing her is the villainous temptress Milady, a spy and general agent of mischief in the French court. The “who to trust” element is palpable as the Musketeers discover enemies among friends and allies among the opposition. Filled with political tension, moral conundrums and immersive action sequences, The Three Musketeers: Milady is exhilarating and entertaining. Runs at 4 p.m. on Friday and 7:30 p.m.on Saturday.
All films are at the Salmar Classic Theatre.
