For lovers of live music, the Acoustic Avenue Spring Concert Series offers an eclectic mix of talented artists to help play in the season.
Kicking off this set of award-winning Canadian singer/songwriters is Coco Love Alcorn, whose Saturday, April 14 show at the Nexus at First (at the Salmon Arm United Church) promises an evening of powerful vocals in a performance that brings together a mix of jazz, pop, R&B and folk, 20 years of touring and 10 albums. Add to this the voices of the Shuswap who will accompany Coco on a select number of songs throughout the show.
Next up is Laura Smith with Kim Dunn on Tuesday, May 8 at the Nexus.
The talented Smith is a well-established force on the Canadian folk landscape. She is delighted to include Kim Dunn’s song, Inspiration, from his album of the same name and will be accompanied by Dunn on piano.
On Friday, June 1, the concert series shifts over to the Salmar Classic where Dave Gunning will take the stage.
Eleven albums into his career, Gunning has become a truly masterful songwriter who has earned respect of his fellow Canadian folk singer/songwriters, including legends Ron Hynes, David Francey and James Keelaghan.
Each of these artists have received multiple music awards and accolades across the country and Acoustic Avenue organizer Ted Crouch is thrilled to have them perform in Salmon Arm.
The Acoustic Avenue Concert Series began last year at the former Canadian Tire location. Crouch said it was launched out of a desire to bring live music to the community during the shoulder seasons.
“We did 20 shows last year…,” said Crouch. “I think what came together was the artists, the audience and the ambiance – that really confirmed it was the right time to really stay focused on it and keep trying to bring great artists who were coming through this community, as well as provide opportunities for artists from the community to have another stage where they can perform, where the audience is actually listening.”
Crouch acknowledged Salmon Arm’s music community has a reputation among artists who talk amongst themselves and want to make the community a tour stop.
“All of us know that it’s a big highway and there’s lots of great artists who are traveling from Calgary to Vancouver… this is a logical five hour drive and a wonderful stop for them to break up the trip between those two major cities,” said Crouch.
“We’ve been doing it, chipping away at the edge for decades, but now, with the talk of the performing arts centre, and just more and more events happening, it’s time to really look at it as a regular thing.”
All shows start at 7:30 p.m.
