In its second season, the Northern Lights Chamber Choir is growing in size and repertoire.
“These pieces are challenging,” says Steve Guidone, who will conduct the choir in its upcoming concert Earth Song. “We’re gonna push the edges of the audiences too.”
Guidone says the eclectic mix of music will give everyone in the audience a lot to enjoy.
When it comes to one of the more challenging pieces, Guidone says one of the choir members asserted that the Salmon Arm community is “not ready for that.”
“I differed, I said, ‘give them some credit,’” he laughs.
The concert takes place at First United Church Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. and the next day, Sunday, at 2:30 p.m.
But fans will get an earlier opportunity to hear the choir.
Earth Song will be performed at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23 at Zion United Church, 2315 Pleasant Valley Blvd. in Armstrong.
It is fitting that the choir debuted this year’s concert at St. Mary’s Anglican/United Church in Sorrento last Sunday, says Guidone.
The late Margot Hewitt was a member of the church and an avid supporter of music and the choir.
Her dream was to see the creation of a first-class chamber choir in Salmon Arm.
“She encouraged us so much but never got to sing in the choir,” says Guidone of the former School District #83 teacher and administrator. “And she is in the hearts of all the choir members.”
This year’s concert is a celebration of the beauty of the earth and all its creatures. Selections will take the audience on a musical trip to faraway lands.
Tickets are $15 and for the Salmon Arm performance are available at First United Church weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
