Travelling regularly on the Trans-Canada Highway

Travelling regularly on the Trans-Canada Highway, we have watched as construction progressed on the Dreamcycle Motorcycle Museum on the southeast corner of the intersection at Balmoral Road.

Owners Doreen and Mark Lane celebrated the grand opening of their new business Saturday, May 12.

The Lanes moved from Grande Prairie, Alta. to operate their new business, just in time for the first seasonal wave of motorcycle fans, actual riders or those of us who prefer to admire from the side.

There are 60 items in the museum now, with a plan for 100 eventually, various makes and models from a vintage 1924 bike to a 2000 racing model, the newest in the collection.

Mark said as we toured past the cycle lineup, “Ours is a rare collection, bikes you wouldn’t see very often. There are less than a handful of independent motorcycle museums across Canada.”

Mark is hugely knowledgeable on historical details of the collection and says a self-guided tour is in the works, with translation in 10 languages being the ultimate goal.

The museum includes a small theatre of about 20 seats ready to entertain or educate with documentaries and other films such as Cars, an animated film for children, which ran during the grand opening.

The gift shop is filled with unique motorcycle-related items, including a barbecue inside a 350 Chevy engine.

Admission is reasonable and a visit to the new museum is worth it for entertainment and a history lesson – or maybe one in physics and mechanical engineering. There is much to see and learn.

Right next door to Dreamcycle Motorcycle Museum is Sprokkets, an inviting sandwich/pastry/ice cream café.

With homestyle soups or salads and a good choice of veggies, nutrition is a prime consideration on the Sprokkets menu. Menu item names are delightful too - with choices like ‘Kawaski Coleslaw’ continuing the motorcycle theme. Doreen Lane with business partner Robin Johnson operate the restaurant seven days per week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Cedar Heights sale

Once again, Cedar Heights had a super garage and plant sale on Saturday, May 5. The event has proven to be a huge and successful fundraiser.

Success was due in large part to Kathleen Wills who organized the event and to all the volunteers.
