Youth services librarian Ardie Burnham puts on a puppet show for children at the Salmon Arm branch of the Okanagan Regional Library. The library has a large number of activities planned for spring break.

 

Okanagan Regional Library’s Salmon Arm branch has a number of special activities planned for spring break.

• March 13 at 11 a.m. – Ardie Burnham will read a chapter from Dragonbreath, a Grade 4 level book, which all children will enjoy.

March 14 at 11 a.m. – Follow the clues to find the prize in a scavenger hunt.

• March 16 at 6:30 p.m. – Kids are encouraged to wear their pyjamas to hear Burnham read a chapter from Jeremy Thatcher, Gragon Hatcher.

Cantina

Film fare

Shuswap Film Society presents Carnage, a France/Germany/Poland drama by Roman Polanski at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at the Salmar Classic.

 

Ballet

Live from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, its Le Corsaire at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at the Salmar Classic. Tickets are $22 for adults and $11 for youths, and are available at the Salmar Grand.

 

Concert

The Shuswap Music Festival Society and the Salmon Arm Rotary Daybreak Club present soprano Stephanie Nakagawa and pianist Joni Chan at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at the SAGA Public Art Gallery.

 

Happiness

Shuswap in Transition and Shuswap Seed Savers present The Economics of Happiness, an award-winning, full-length documentary film, at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at the Salmar Classic Theatre. Admission by minimum $5 donation.

 

Art break

SAGA Public Art Gallery offers two full-day workshops for kids aged 9 to 13 during the spring break. “Matisse Monday” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 12 will have participants learning about Henri Matisse and the early cubists, plus experimenting with colour, motifs and cutouts.

“Mondrian Monday” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 19 will feature Piet Mondrian and his contemporaries in the abstract art movement, plus projects in felting and abstract painting.  Cost to participate is $20 per child. Register at the gallery or email sagapublicartgallery@telus.net.

 

Hitchfest

Okanagan College English department presents Alfred Hitchcock's  North by Northwest 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 12 at the Salmar Classic. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students,  at the door.

 

Young writers

Enter your creative short stories and poetry in the Fifth Annual Young Writers’ Contest open to students 5-18 years in school districts #83 and #22 only. Deadline is April 5. No cost to enter. Improv

Laughing Gas Improv Troupe presents ‘Blarney Time’  at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 7:30 p.m.

Lenten Journey

First United Church presents Expanding Our Horizons, a series of thoughtful, inspiring presentations for the Lenten journey at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evenings to March 24. On March 24, Vida Yakong will present Project GROW.

The church will host various area artists who will share their work in fabric, painting, pottery, sculpture, word forms, wood and how their art reflects their spirituality, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24.

Musicians, storytellers, poets and others will perform live at an evening coffee-house at 7.

Dowsing

Improve your intuition; communicate with your higher self, spirit guides and guardian angels in a weekend dowsing workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 17 and 18 in the boardroom of the SASCU Downtown Activity Centre. Register at 250-835-8236. $75 for one day or $125 for both.

 

Mexican music

El Mariachi Los Dorados welcome spring with a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20 at SAGA Public Art Gallery. Tickets are available at Acorn Music.

SEAS show

The Shuswap Environmental Action Society (SEAS) will host a fundraising concert to promote the acquisition of the former Cottonwoods Campground near the Adams River, featuring  indie-folk-rock star Joel Plaskett, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 15.

Advance tickets are $25 and are available at Acorn Music, or $30 at the door.

 

Probus

Probus, a low-impact organization for retired and semi-retired persons who have professional, business or management experience, offers opportunities to promote good health, to expand personal interests and to promote fellowship.

The first Salmon Arm club is filled to the brim and the club is proposing two more such clubs in this area.
