The Shuswap Area Family Emergency Society (SAFE) will celebrate women’s achievements with live music, vendors, door prizes, speakers and more.

Part of the annual International Women’s Day celebrations, the event is celebrated globally to acknowledge the accomplishments of women and to highlight the needs for women in general.

This year the theme is “Be Bold For Change” and the local celebration takes place at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 4 at the Shuswap Pie Company.

The event, which is free to attend, will feature the music of Making Do and will include food and beverages provided by the Shuswap Pie Companyand door prizes too.

There will also be opportunity to learn about the history and future of women’s rights and how our community can work together to “Be Bold For Change.”

Attendees wil also be invited to support women in business by shopping from local vendors.

The Shuswap Area Family Emergency Society (SAFE) was established in 1979 by a group of women in the community who recognized the need for a shelter/safe haven for women experiencing violence in the home.

This grassroots organization was built by support from, and in conjunction with, the women’s movement in the 1970s.

As a registered not-for-profit organization the SAFE Society has had to adapt and evolve its governance structure to accommodate the demands from funders and community stakeholders.

The SAFE Society now has many programs that support families that are impacted by violence. For more information about programming, go to www.safesociety.ca and for general information, contact safesociety@shaw.ca.
