Friends and family are rallying around a young Salmon Arm man who was severely injured in a vehicle collision Highway 1, and are now turning to the community for additional support.
A GoFundMe account has been started for 20-year-old Mikiyas Hatton (Miki) who was driving to Calgary on Oct. 19, when he lost control of his Nissan car in the Rogers Pass and hit a B-train semi-truck. While the truck driver was unharmed, Mike sustained numerous injuries, including head trauma, a collapsed lung, multiple facial fractures, broken bones, a broken chest plate and more, according to the GoFundMe.
Fundraising organizer Taylor McLaren described Hatton as a "one-in-a-million" young man she is honoured to know.
"He is compassionate, altruistic and noble, always working to lend a hand to those in need," she said. "The kind of person who reminds you of the good in this world. The kind of person who deserves all the goodness this world has to offer."
It would appear others feel the same as the GoFundMe already 103 donations already totalling $15,242 of the $100,000 goal in the 19 hours it had been online.
In the post, McLaren added that prior to the crash Hatton had been working two jobs to buy his first car and move out on his own, and had just signed a lease on Oct. 1. Despite that schedule, he still managed to give back to family, friends and the community.
"Now is the time I beg for the giving and caring to be returned to him. The road ahead from Miki will be long and challenging to heal from his injuries, the trauma of the accident and putting his life back together," McLaren wrote. "Please help this very deserving brother, son and friend on his journey home."
