The Salmon Arm RCMP warn people not to share nude photos online after attempted blackmail against a local man, again.

On March 11, a 62-year-old man reported that he was being extorted for $1,000 after he'd sent out nude photographs. He told police that an unknown man was demanding payment or would share the photos online that he had received from the complainant.

In a media release, Const. Andrew Hodges said the complainant "had made a similar report in 2023," and police advised him not to send any money and block the extortionist. Officers also showed the man how to make his social media profiles private and advised that while there was no way to control the image being shared, social media platforms have policies banning nudity.

"Salmon Arm RCMP do not advise sharing nude photographs online, or via cellphone messaging services," Hodges added. "Once those photos are shared, you have no control over what happens with them, or who they are shared with afterwards."
