A Salmon Arm man was arrested for two new offences while at the courthouse trying to see his probation officer.

At 8 a.m. on Aug. 24, the RCMP received a report from a woman stating that her vehicle had been broken into on 10 Avenue SW, with two purses, a tablet, cellphone and cash having been taken. She added that she had received an alert the phone was accessed earlier that morning, and that her credit card had been used at a local restaurant at 6 a.m.

Officers attended the restaurant where they watched security footage of the suspect at the time the card was used.

"Later that day, police were on patrol and observed a male matching the one seen in the surveillance video at the restaurant," Const. Andrew Hodges said in a media release. "The male was observed banging on a door at the courthouse, and stated he was trying to meet up with his probation officer."

Police arrested the 44-year-old man for possession of property obtained by crime and seized several items on him, including a cellphone matching the stolen one, cash and a knife contrary to his probation conditions. He was also arrested for breach of probation and later released with a future court date to speak to the allegations.
