A portion of Salmon Arm's Foreshore Trail will be closed to the public next month to allow work on a sanitary sewer main.
The section of trail between the trail's Harbourfront Drive access and Christmas Island will be closed from Feb. 3 to the end of March. This is to allow the rehabilitation of a half-century old section of sanitary sewer main.
"The sanitary main, installed in the 1970s has reached the end of its useful life and is being rehabilitated. Phase 1 was completed in 2017, and we’re pleased to begin this next phase," explained the city in a Jan. 22 post on social media.
The $1.5 million project involves lining a 775 metre section. Phase 1 saw to the lining of 1.3 kilometres of the main south from Raven. The third phase will involve linking the remaining 1.5 kilometres leading to Marine Park.
The first phase was funded with a mix of $1.42 million in provincial and federal grant money, and another $300,000 from the city. Funding was sought for the refurbishment after a leak in 2012 that allowed water to infiltrate the sanitary system and wreak havoc on the city’s sewage treatment plant. Six days passed before city crews were able to locate and repair the leak.
