In a reflection of the current economic climate, School District 83 trustees will see an increase to their earnings in 2024.

SD83 policy states that trustee remuneration be reviewed annually with adjustments made to reflect the previous year’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), which spiked in 2022.

“It comes in at 6.9 per cent due to our soaring inflation costs,” board chair Amanda Krebs said, with the last few CPI increases being hovering around 2.5 per cent, except for 2020 at .8 per cent.

Increases will range from approximately $1,000 to $1,200, as they are based on last year’s pay that ranged from $14,697 for the lowest paid trustee to the board chair at $17,964. That base remuneration also covers trustee expenses “in an amount equal to 1/3 of the remuneration,” with that covering mileage to and from regular board meetings and liaison schools, as well as general expenses such as a tech allowance.

There is also a travel stipend for trustees of rural zones, which in 2018 was set at $250 for North Shuswap, Sorrento and Carlin, and $500 for Sicamous and Enderby areas, Armstrong/Spallumcheen, Falkland, Silver Creek and Ranchero. As vice chair Corryn Grayston wanted to discuss that further, it will be brought forward to the Dec. 19 meeting.
