Speechless in Sicamous; words fail King's Coronation Medal recipient

'I don't know what to say except that I'm grateful to be a part of this community'

A Sicamous man who speaks for a living was left speechless by an honour recently bestowed on him.

At the Sept. 11 council meeting, MLA Greg Kyllo attended on the pretense of giving a farewell speech but instead surprised Coun. Bob Evans with the King's Coronation Medal "in recognition of your valuable contribution to the community."

"I don't really know what to say," Evans managed, though the look of shock on his face said it all.

"This is a beautiful town and we're all privileged to serve it. Yeah, I don't know what to say except that I'm grateful to be a part of this community for the last 16 years, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."

Well known in Sicamous not only as a member of council, but also as 'Pastor Bob' with the Shuswap Community Church and The Hub and big kid at heart, Evans is very involved as a mentor to young people in the area.

"Our youth are the next generation and we should be pouring everything we can into them," he said in an speech in which he, in true Evans form, accepted on behalf of other community supporters.

"Thank you very much," he humbly added in closing.
