It was a mixed bag of a weekend at home for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks, who shut out the Spruce Grove Saints and then fell 4-1 to the Trail Smoke Eaters.
On Friday night, Nov. 29, the 'Backs hosted the Saints at Rogers Rink. Neither team was able to light up the board until 6:47 in the second period, when Silverback Maddux Martin scored his 12th goal of the season, assisted by Cole Cooksey and Kacyee Cole. The game remained at 1-0 until Salmon Arm's Patrick Raftery added a marker early in the third frame, assisted by Maxime Lafond. At 11:46, teammate Riley Ashe rippled the mesh on the power play, with Cooksey and Tommy Cronin assisting in the delivery.
Salmon Arm goalie Ryan Grout stopped 19 shots, while the Saints' Ryan De Kok blocked 27.
The following night's game versus Trail went in the opposite direction for the Silverbacks. The Smokies were first on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by Jack Ziliotto around the halfway mark in the second. Minutes later, Ziliotto assisted a short-handed goal by Ridge Dawson.
At 6:40 in the third, Salmon Arm's Kaycee Coyle scored his first career BCHL goal, assisted by Tanner Walos. This was followed soon after with a goal by Trail's Gryphon Bucci, who would score once more, an empty-netter, before the final buzzer.
Grout stopped 20 shots, while Trail's Ryan Parker denied 29.
The 'Backs are back on home ice next weekend with games versus the Cranbrook Bucks (Dec. 6) and the Brooks Bandits (Dec. 7).
