Kelowna RCMP say speed is a leading cause of fatal collisions in B.C.

Kelowna RCMP nabbed two excessive speeders at the same time in different areas of the city Tuesday (July 16).

One officer was set up on Springfield Road near View Road where he clocked a vehicle doing106 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

At the same time, another officer set up on Highway 33 near Garner Road caught a vehicle travelling 108km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Both drivers were given excessive speeding tickets of $368 and had their vehicles impounded for seven days.

It wasn’t the first excessive speeding ticket for the driver caught on Highway 33, which may result in further sanctions from ICBC.

“The distance between Kelowna and Vernon is 50 kilometres,” said Sgt. Colby Attlesey with RCMP Municipal Traffic Services. “The time difference between driving 90km/h and 130km/h over that distance is 10 minutes. Is 10 minutes worth $368 and a vehicle impound?”

Attlesey pointed out that speed is a leading cause of fatal collisions in B.C.

“It is certainly not worth your life or the lives of those around you, so please, obey the speed limit.”
