It might not have been 7 kilometres, but about 100 Kelowna residents did step up for a cause.

The second annual Walk in Her Shoes event took place at Mission Creek Park this Sunday in advance of International Woman’s Day.

Local organizer Wendy Wright says the event is meant to raise awareness and funds in support of gender equality and to help end global poverty.

“Basically this is to bring awareness to the fact that in developing countries, women and more specifically girls have to take 10,000 steps or 6 to 7 km a day just to get basic necessities such as water and firewood,” explained Wright.

This year’s event raised about $6000 for CARE— an international humanitarian agency delivering emergency relief and long-term international development projects.

International Women’s Day is Wednesday March 8, which is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The day has been observed since in the early 1900’s an is a a collective day to call for gender parity.

This Wednesday Okanagan College Student Union will host an on campus event in Kelowna in front of the library at 11 a.m.

There will also be a movie screening of the film, The Hunting Ground, which focuses on sexual assault on college campuses, at 6 p.m. in room E103.
