The Okanagan Forest Task Force was at it again over the weekend cleaning up another illegal dumping of garbage left in the backcountry.
This is the third time since the start of November that the task force has cleared large piles of garbage left in the Okanagan forest.
On Nov. 18, Kane Blake the founder of OFTF, was up Postil Lake Road cleaning up debris left down the side of an embankment.
The garbage included two couches along with household items.
Unfortunately, the ground was very unstable, according to Blake caused issues when it came to hauling the mess out of the backcountry and it will take several trips to clear the area.
On Nov. 12, Blake reported cleaning up the largest encampment the task force has ever encountered. The camp, located near Okanagan Falls, was full of travel trailers, cars, motorhomes, metal, tons and tons of garbage.
A week previous the group was up Beaver Lake Road, near Lake Country, cleaning a different encampment. This area was filled with garbage and debris, as well as evidence of freshly cut green trees.
According to the post, Blake said the camp had only been in place for about two weeks.
“This is a perfect example of why we need to keep an eye on what’s going on in our backcountry,” he said at the time.
The task force took two trips to the camp and filled five to six trucks with garbage to fully clean up that area.
Since Sep. 2016, the OFTF has cleaned up more than 815,000 pounds of garbage from the Okanagan backcountry.
