Conviction for indecent assault

A Salmon Arm resident was convicted of indecent assault in a Yellowknife court Thursday.

A Salmon Arm resident was convicted of indecent assault in a Yellowknife court Thursday.

On March 5 in the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories, David Button, now in his seventies, was found guilty of assaulting an adolescent boy in the 1970s.

Media reports state the victim testified he was sexually assaulted by Button in a car during a driving lesson. Button was then a guidance councillor at a secondary school in Inuvik.

A sentencing hearing takes place April 22.

Although Button’s defence lawyer asked for him to be released from custody until the sentencing, the judge agreed with Crown counsel that Button is a convicted pedophile so should be jailed immediately.

He was subsequently imprisoned in Yellowknife.
