Enderby area residents are being asked to dig deep to enhance fire protection.

The Enderby Fire Department has launched a $600,000 fundraiser to expand the current facility.

“The facility is getting old and too small, and we’re having to buy equipment that fits into the hall instead of fitting the needs of the community,” said Craig Bell, vice-president of the Enderby Fire Rescue Society.

The plan calls for an extra bay that would house a ladder truck, a command vehicle and a gear room.

Conditions can be tight as 20 people try to get into their gear right next to the trucks.

“We want to be prepared for big fires such as occurred across B.C. this year,” said Bell.

Bell is confident the fundraising campaign will be successful over 10 months.

“Rather than put the burden on taxpayers, we decided to go this route,” said Bell of soliciting contributions from residents and businesses, while also pursuing grants.

“We will also do some fundraising events. We hope 600 businesses will donate $1,000 each. That would be ideal.”

Fire protection services are provided to Enderby, Grindrod, areas near Ashton Creek and the Splatsin, while firefighters respond to motor vehicle accidents from Mabel Lake to Mara.

An account has been established at Enderby Financial for donations.

“It’s a great next step for them (fire department) and the community,” said Mayor Greg McCune of the campaign.

“They are a great group and we will throw our support behind them.”
