Events bylaw gets special meeting

Council to give second reading to special events bylaw Monday morning

Salmon Arm council will give second reading to a new special events bylaw Monday morning.

This special meeting of council on Feb. 21 begins at 8:30 a.m., on the heels of the development and planning committee meeting.

The bylaw would allow the city to collect fees for special events with 5,000 or more people. In particular, it gives the city an opportunity to recoup costs associated with policing, fire control and municipal public works.

Council may approve the bylaw for third reading, or consider shelving it as was suggested Monday at a public hearing by representatives of the Sturgis North motorcycle rally, the Salmon Arm Folk Music Society and the Salmon Arm Fall Fair. While the bylaw was spurred by Sturgis, planned for July 13 to 17, all three groups noted the bylaw would be financially detrimental.
