Firefighters blast water at a blaze that took place Wednesday night at a home on 15th Ave. SE.

A family of four escaped with their lives but lost their home to a fire in the 1900 block of 15th Street SE.

The Salmon Arm Fire Department responded  with some 30 firefighters from Hall 2 and 3 at about 10:30 last night.

Assistant fire chief Jim Nickles says the father heard a noise, saw smoke and managed to wake his family, including two children, and get them out of the house in time.

"It looks like it started in the garage and penetrated the wall into the house, but we knocked it down before it got too big or spread to another residence," he said, noting he was on his way to investigate the fire this morning.

Salmon Arm RCMP report the cause of the blaze is not known, however, foul play is not suspected.

Fire crews were on scene until 1 a.m.
