Salmon Arm public works staff are doing what they can to repair flooded and damaged roads in the city, but the work won’t be done overnight.

Foothill Road is blocked again, but only for this week.

Rob Niewenhuizen, the city’s director of engineering and public works, reports that crews installed a culvert as a temporary repair at the Foothill Road washout. However, that was done so the road could be reopened until all of the remediation work was arranged and new materials are ordered.

It’s now closed again as the permanent repairs begin.

“This is the first phase of the project. We are lowering the water main so that we can facilitate the installation of the new large diameter culvert,” Niewenhuizen said.

The road will then be reopened and the remainder of the work will be completed after the environmental permit is obtained in August.

As for other washout locations such as in Gleneden, Niewenhuizen states: “We are planning to work them one by one as they all require new culverts and the Ministry of Environment’s ‘notice of works’ permit requires a 45-day waiting/review period prior to any works being started.”
