Firefighters finish dousing the remains of a small fire behind the Apple Grove Motel off the Trans-Canada-Highway in Canoe on Thursday, Aug. 10.

Fire crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the vicinity of the Apple Grove Motel off Highway 1 near Canoe just before noon today (Thursday).

Response was particularly rapid thanks to the close proximity of the motel to the fire hall in Canoe. The motel is located at 6000 50th St. NE.

Salmon Arm Fire Chief Brad Shirley says residents and neighbours were helping to extinguish the fire using buckets, so “we kind of finished up the job for them.”

Grass and an old mattress were on fire. Shirley said the cause hasn’t been determined.

The fire was directly behind the motel and firefighters were mopping up and leaving by about 12:15 p.m.
