Fire destroys Gleneden home

Salmon Arm Fire Chief Brad Shirley says the fire department received the call at 9 p.m. on Monday, July 1

A house in Gleneden was razed by fire on Canada Day.

Salmon Arm Fire Chief Brad Shirley says the fire department received the call at 9 p.m. on Monday, July 1, reporting a possible residential fire in Gleneden. Firefighting crews from all four fire halls responded, rushing to the blaze in the 6000 block of 40th Street NW.

Firefighters weren’t able to save the house but remained on scene until 3 a.m., making sure all hot spots were well-extinguished.

“The house was a total loss,” Shirley explained. “There were no injuries to report – the residents weren’t at home at the time of the fire.”

He said the residents, whose names are not yet being released, were away for just a few hours. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but he said he believes the house was insured for fire.

Shirley expects the cause will be determined in the next couple of days.

Firefighters responded to another call over the long weekend, this one a small brush fire in the Sherwood Forest subdivision in northeast Salmon Arm. It was reported about 1 p.m. on Saturday and was quickly extinguished. Shirley said it is believed to have been caused by a spark from grinding being carried out nearby.
