From beaver to moose, it’s all about Canada

Art exhibition features iconic, people, places and images

Photo contributed Alex Jensen’s timbit box is one of the iconic Canadian images, people and places that will be on exhibition at the Salmon Arm Art Gallery, which opens with a reception at 7 p.m. Friday, March 3.

The Shuswap Arts Council is joining Canada 150 celebrations in this year’s exhibitions.

During the month of March and April, the Salmon Arm Art Gallery will present “Beginning of the Long Dash,” an exhibition featuring 15 artists from the North Okanagan/Shuswap in dialogue with iconic Canadian images, people and places.

“Icons such as CBC Radio, maple syrup, Joni Mitchell, the Hudson’s Bay point blanket, the moose, the beaver and the toque all reside in our collective Canadian soul,” says Tracey Kutschker, executive director of the gallery. “Artists will be revisiting these iconic subjects, interpreting them in their media through the lens of 2017, the year of Canada’s sesquicentennial.”

The exhibition opens with a reception at 7 p.m. Friday, March 3 and features live music and refreshments. uns from March 4 to April 22. Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and admission is by donation.

The Artist Talks for this exhibition are from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 16 and April 20. Family Saturdays feature drop-in art-making for families with young children and take place every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Artist trading cards make and trade sessions are on Tuesday, March 14 and April 11 from 3 to 4 p.m.
