The fight against invaders is getting some ammunition.

The provincial government is providing $61,600 to the North Okanagan-Shuswap to help manage invasive plants.

“Invasive plants can quickly establish themselves in natural ecosystems and do permanent damage by wiping out indigenous species,” said Greg Kyllo, Shuswap MLA.

“They can also have a devastating effect on our agricultural industries and that can hurt jobs in our local economy.”

The funding includes $38,300 for the Regional District of North Okanagan, $13,300 for the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society and $10,000 for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District.

The money will be used to help raise public awareness of invasive plant concerns, survey invasive plant populations and actively treat high-priority sites to control the spread of these destructive plants.
