Home invasion nets two years

James Daryl Oliver admitted guilt for his role in a home invasion robbery and will serve two years in jail less one day.

Oliver, 29, was charged along with two other men after breaking into a Salmon Arm residence, where the occupants were threatened over a $140 drug debt, and a couch was taken as payment.

The incident took place Dec. 11, 2010, when the RCMP received a report of an abandoned 911 call from a residence on Third Street SE.

When police arrived, a man and woman were in the house and the man was frantically cleaning up the apartment and telling the woman not to talk to the RCMP.

It later came out that the couple had been sleeping on the couch when the three suspects burst into their home. One of the men was armed with a machete and sat beside the woman, putting the knife to her throat and seeking money.

When the couple explained they had no money on hand, the men attempted to remove the television from the home, but it was too big and heavy. Instead, the men then removed the couch from the home.

The victims knew two of the men, but did not recognize Oliver.

Police surrounded the residence of one of the suspects, and after unsuccessful attempts to get the occupants to come out, RCMP went into the residence and  discovered a couch which matched the description of the stolen item.

Oliver admitted to a role in the robbery, including kicking in the door of the victims’ residence and threatening them with two days to pay the drug debt, as well as assisting with the theft.

In addition to the jail time, Oliver was sentenced to two years probation and a 10-year firearms prohibition.

The other men involved still have their cases before the court.
