Two horses have been stolen from a Chase family.
RCMP Sargent Gary Heebner said police received a report on June 25 that two horses went missing around 3 p.m. on June 23.
Peter Anthony, who owns the horses, said his brother informed him that Polly, a two-and-a-half year old and Willow, an eight-year-old mare, were loaded up into a black trailer.
The mare is a chestnut (reddish-brown) colour with a long white blaze on her face and the two-year-old is a little darker brown with a small white patch between her eyes.
Anthony said the horses were his children’s and the family is upset.
“They’re a part of my family,” said Anthony. “We can’t have people going around stealing stock, that’s just not right.”
If the horses are spotted, the public is asked to call the Chase RCMP.
RCMP assault
A Chase Mountie was treated for injuries after a traffic stop turned into an assault in Pritchard over the weekend.
An officer pulled over a vehicle on Stony Flats Road in Pritchard just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, for suspicion of impaired driving. During the traffic stop, the driver and a passenger began beating the officer, police say. The vehicle took off, leaving the injured Mountie on the road until a passerby stopped to help.
The driver of the suspect vehicle and its two passengers were arrested a short time later. The trio have since been released and are expected to appear in court next month.
The injured officer has been released from hospital.
Fire sparked
Fireworks lit up the land as well as the sky in this year’s Canada Day display in Chase.
A couple of small spot fires were easily doused by members of the Chase Volunteer Fire Department, but one larger one took hold in an inaccessible area and required assistance from Ministry of Forest fire crews.
“We had fireworks as we do every year,” said Village of Chase chief administrative officer Joni Heinrich. “There were a couple of spot fires up in the area closer to where the fireworks were being let off and we had to stop the show halfway through to handle them.”
The fireworks were shot out over Shuswap Lake from the Mattey Bros. lumber yard at the top of the hill on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Chase.
Heinrich says Chase firefighters had foamed down the area prior to the show and had plenty of water at the scene.
Volunteer firefighters also did a sweep of the area at the conclusion of the fireworks display at approximately 11:15 p.m. That is when they discovered a fire that had started low down on the hillside in an area they were unable to reach.
“We had to stop the trains and the Ministry of Forests came in,” said Heinrich, pointing out firefighters remained on scene to make sure the .5 hectare fire was contained. “We’re really appreciative of their service.”
Kayla Pepper, fire information officer with the Kamloops Fire Centre, says forestry fire crews were on scene until early Wednesday morning.
