Information sought in moose killing

The BC Conservation Service is asking for information from the public after two bull moose were killed and left to rot over the weekend.

Conservation officer Brent Smith says the first dead moose was reported Friday left on a forestry road on Bastion Mountain near Herald Park.

“They took nothing, no meat, no antlers. It was just shot and left in a ditch,” said Smith of the 1,200 to 1,400 pound specimen.

“I don’t know the motivation for doing something like this, but it is certainly a shame to see.”

The second moose was shot near Lisa Creek near Falkland. It too was abandoned.

Smith says the conservation service is anxious to hear from anyone who may have information about the illegal hunting activity.

The moose hunting season doesn’t open in this area until Oct. 15. As well, harvesting is restricted to juvenile animals or a limited entry hunt. Proper licenses and tags are required for any legally caught moose. The BC Wildlife Federation does offer rewards of up to $2,000 for information leading to the conviction of violators. Contact the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277. Information can be anonymous.
