Kelowna RCMP are reminding drivers to slow down in school zones.
Throughout the first week of school, officers were in several school zones and in total, had 212 interactions with drivers and gave out 62 tickets - 56 for speeding in a school zone and six for distracted driving. The other 150 people were given warnings.
“After a busy first day, the number of our contacts with motorists did drop,” says Sgt. Colby Attlesey with the Kelowna Municipal Traffic unit. “The first day back is always our busiest, with motorists forgetting that school zones are in effect. Now that we are a week back into classes, I suspect our interactions will continue to drop, however we will still be in school zones enforcing safety.”
Officers will continue to patrol school zones throughout the school year.
School zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday each week.
