New service for chronically ill

Those with chronic illnesses are one step closer to getting ongoing assistance.

Those with chronic illnesses are one step closer to getting ongoing assistance.

A free workshop took place in Salmon Arm’s Uptown Askew’s. Offered by Self Management British Columbia, it outlined tips and advice for coaches in the health coaching program.

The telephone support program consists of volunteer coaches who call once a week for three months to those who have a chronic illness and who need encouragement to keep them on track.

“It’s for those with chronic conditions that just need the extra push,” said coordinator Sofia Khouw.

The program is designed to help participants with exercise, symptom management, communication, heath, stress, disability and more.

The goal is to allow participants to realize services available for them in the community, said Khouw.

“They’re being kept accountable on a weekly basis,” she said.

The coaching seminar had participants from Salmon Arm, Merritt, Kelowna, and Nakusp role playing and developing strategies to better coach their partners.

The program is based out of the University of Victoria’s Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health.
