Okanagan-Shuswap’s MP is preparing to retire – and has almost ruled out taking a run at the Salmon Arm mayor's chair.
Colin Mayes announced to Conservative members in Enderby Saturday that he will not run for federal office again.
“By the time the election rolls around in the fall of 2015, I will have served the riding for almost 10 years,” he said in a news release.
“After speaking with my family and close friends, I have decided not to seek re-election in 2015. This has been a difficult decision for me but at this point in my life I believe it is time to move on and spend time in the beautiful Okanagan-Shuswap that I love.”
Although Mayes says he will complete his term in Ottawa, he hasn’t quashed speculation that he will run this November for Salmon Arm mayor, a position he held for nine years.
“I don’t think I would do that, it’s about 80 per cent no.”
He says he knows local Conservatives will select the party’s next candidate well.
"I am confident that you will choose my successor wisely to represent the banner of the Conservative Party of Canada in the riding of North Okanagan - Shuswap. To those that are not of the Conservative banner, I have represented you with equal representation and hope you can see the positives in my service in the riding."
He continued: “Being an MP is not an easy job. In our riding, we have a total of about 121,000 constituents who are all my employers, many with differing views on issues. It is challenging to please everyone but I want you to know I have heard your voices and read all your concerns sent by e-mail or letter and strive to find and support the consensus."
“I will continue to serve with the same energy that I exercised when I was first elected until my current term has ended in October of 2015.”
