Politicians oppose emergency cuts

City council will be voicing its displeasure with proposed federal cuts to the national emergency preparedness programming.

City council will be voicing its displeasure with proposed federal cuts to the national emergency preparedness programming.

A report to council states Public Safety Canada has announced that at the end of 2012 they will be eliminating the federally-funded Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP), funding for all heavy urban search and rescue teams (HUSAR) as well as critical infrastructure initiatives.

The report claims the cancellation will have a “devastating impact on the ability of local government in general and the emergency program in particular.

Coun. Denise Reimer asked for, and received the support of council to write a letter opposing the cuts.

“This is a valuable program that we use in the area,” said Reimer. “I would just like to see that we support the program as much as possible and let them know our views.”
